What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is the oldest form of spiritual healing.
Our ancient ancestors all over the world discovered how to communicate with the spirit world for healing and insight.
There are many variations of shamanism throughout the world and several common beliefs are shared by all forms of shamanism.
The basic principle of shamanism is the belief that everything has a spirit.
What is a Shaman?
A practitioner of shamanism is known as a shaman.
Shamans are intermediaries between the human and spirit worlds. They facilitate healing by entering an altered state of consciousness to work with their helping spirits.
This is the foundation of shamanic work.
Core Shamanism:
Anthropologist Dr. Michael Harner developed Core shamanism from his research of many cultures.
He discovered that all over the world, while the overall traditions within the shamanic communities , there were key elements in common.
Dr. Harner then created techniques to blend these elements so that anyone could use them without disrespecting any culture's sacred rituals
Tools of the Shaman:
The Drum and Rattle: Many cultures use a from of sound to bring the body and mind into an altered state of consciousness. The drum or rattle represents the heart beat of Mother Earth.
The Journey: A form of meditation induced by the sounds of drumming and/or rattling. A pathway to the shamanic worlds to meet with spirit in non-ordinary reality.
The Shamanic Worlds:
The Lower World: This is the first level encountered when one begins journeying and it is where power animals are found.
The Middle World: This is where faeries and devas are found as well as plant and rock spirits. It exists just outside of ordinary reality.
The Upper World: This is where spiritual teachers and the Archetypes (gods and goddesses) can be found.
Shamanic Techniques:
Creating/Honoring Sacred Space: Before any sacred work is done the space is cleared, blessed and honored.
Power Animal Retrievals: The power animal is considered to be a guardian and teacher. We all have power animals that guide, support and inspire us.
Soul Retrieval: During our lifetime we may experience traumatic events in which parts of our soul may leave us. This is called soul loss and in Soul Retrieval the piece of the soul is returned to the body.
Extractions: Shamanic extraction is the removal of displaced energy. This is energy that does not belong in the body and may cause illness.
